These aren’t the good old days. I was chewing the fat the other day with a speechwriter who’s been in the business since the 1980s. He told me the game has changed—and not for the better. “Back then, you could do your job until 11 a.m.,” he recalled, “and then close your door and freelance the rest of the day!” That’s right. Speechwriters once had doors.
