274That's a Good Idea
Iam honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest science and engineering universities in the country. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life.
Just three short stories.
The first one is about how the third time is not always the charm.
I decided, after graduating from the computer science program at New York University, that I would pursue getting a Ph.D...
Only a year earlier I didn't even know what a Ph.D. was. No one had ever told me and I hadn't known anyone who had one. But I quickly met lots of people who had this thing called a Ph.D. when I went to work for the summer at AT&T Bell Labs.
I may not have known what a Ph.D. was but I knew what Bell Labs was. It was the place where scientists won Nobel Prizes, filed two patents a day, and helped changed the way we all live today.
