I want to thank all of you for being here andthis day. I would like to begin with special thanks to my family and introduce them to you. My son Rick; my son Mark and his wife, Wendy; their daughter, Kali; and my wife, Carol, who is always willing and able to help whenever I need help, and that is very often.
On this spot, 60 years ago, I was a wide-eyed freshman taking a Saturday morning class. The buildings that were here at that time were relatively new Quonset huts, temporary quarters for classes and laboratories for a student body swollen with World War II veterans. All student housing was overflowing. Many of us lived on the other side of the Wabash until a room became available on campus or in West Lafayette. But the veterans knew why they were here and what they wanted to achieve. I learned much from them.
