Innovating with Government to Change theWorld
It is an honor to be with you today and to participate in this important symposium. How many of you work ing for or with the government woke up this morning and said, "I am going to change the world today?"
The question makes some people uncomfortable. It's idealistic, and idealists are often looked at as tilting at windmills. Yet the desire to make a positive impact on the world is why most of us are in this room today.
I have been associated with the public sector for over 30 years, all of them at IBM. At the end of each day, I always feel I did something to deliver on a promise I made to myself as a young man: I will do something to help make the world better.
That's why the theme of this conference - "The Promise of Digital Government" - is personally important to me.
I would like to talk about four aspects of information technology that can help make this promise real for millions of people in the U.S. and around the world.
